Nicole took a few steps, then snapped her head around, as she heard the raised Russian voices of her captors. There was no time to waste. She had to move and she had to move fast. She immediately took off sprinting into the forest.

As she maneuvered around a few trees, gunfire broke out. Bullets pierced the trees around her, breaking off pieces of the bark. The bullets narrowly missed, but Nicole could almost feel the breeze that came with each missing bullet that somehow avoided her.

Nicole slipped a few times, as she frantically tried her best to get away from the men that were chasing her. She didn’t even know how many there were. She assumed there were less than ten. But she wasn’t even sure if she could believe that. All that was based on Evgeni’s initial statement to her when she tried to leave. For all she knew, he could’ve been blowing so much smoke up her ass it could have started a fire. He might have just been downplaying the numbers to put her more at ease, and make her more vulnerable. She could assume nothing at this point.

For all she knew, there was an army behind her. And she had to plan like there was. She didn’t know the terrain. Her enemies did. That instantly put her at a disadvantage. She had two options. She either had to outrun them, or she had to stop and pick a few of them off, and hopefully slow them down. They wouldn’t be so eager to chase if one of them could go down at any minute. Both plans had their risks, of course.

Nicole periodically looked back as she ran around some trees. They seemed to be gaining on her. The wound on her hip, though not especially painful at this point, maybe had an effect on her. Maybe her lack of energy from being drugged and tied up slowed her down somewhat. Whatever the case, it became clear that she wasn’t going to outrun them.

Though the men were still a good distance away, to Nicole, it almost felt like they were so within reach that they could touch her. After another minute or so, Nicole knew what she had to do. She suddenly stopped behind a tree, and took aim.

She patiently waited until one unlucky soul ran within her sights. As soon as that man did, she fired. He instantly went down. She remained in place, waiting for another opportunity to reduce the odds. Suddenly, everything seemed quiet. She didn’t hear any voices. She didn’t detect the crunching sounds of shoes stepping on and breaking branches, or the cold thump on the ground that a chilly day could have.

They were out there. There was no question about that. The hairs on the back of Nicole’s neck stood up, knowing something was about to happen. Though she wasn’t nervous, she knew the severity of the situation. She tried to control her breathing. Being too amped up was a good way to overcompensate for something, get killed.
